Two machines cover one moment: a gateway pair flanking the reception entrance, or two units on opposing edges of the dance floor for the first dance. Four cover a dance floor surround, or two separate moments in a wider room. Room shape and the number of moments you're buying set the count. Guest count barely enters it.
Everything after that number is unglamorous. Positions get marked, filed, and then held. Activation lengths get chosen against a 30-second thermal cutoff. How many machines your wedding actually needs
Bookings come in even numbers: 2, 4, 6, 8. The effect is symmetrical by nature, and one machine firing on a single side of a doorway reads as equipment failure. The pair is the planning unit.
2 machines buy one moment done properly, either a gateway at the entrance or a first dance framed from both sides. 4 machines buy either a wider look on one moment or two moments in different parts of the room, which matters when the entrance doors and the dance floor aren't in the same sightline. Filed positions are fixed positions, so an operator can't quietly relocate a pair between the grand entrance and the first dance.
6 and 8 unit counts belong to festival stages and large convention rooms. A 300-guest ballroom with a single first dance still runs on 2 machines when the geometry is right, and a 90-guest reception in an awkward room can need 4.
Room shape decides more than headcount. A long room with the head table at one end gives every guest the same sightline, so one pair carries. An L-shaped room, a room split by a bar, or a reception with the dance floor tucked behind a structural column means half the guests see nothing from one pair, and the fix is a second pair rather than a taller machine.

Where the machines go, moment by moment

Machines face each other in pairs, flanking whatever the guests are already looking at. The rest is per moment.
Reception entrance
A gateway pair sits either side of the doorway the couple walks through, angled slightly inward so the two fountains read as one arch from the room. Gateway spacing comes out of the fallout calculation, and in practice the pair works across a 4-foot walkway with machines on the floor to each side or on the edge of a low stage. Closer than that and the fallout zones start overlapping the path people are walking down, which is where the safety conversation begins.
Check the sightline from the head table and from the far corners before positions are marked. An entrance effect the couple walks through and nobody in the room can photograph is a wasted cue.
First dance
Two machines on opposing dance floor edges, firing upward, with the couple between them. Guest standoff is the live constraint here, because the front row of a first dance is a ring of people holding phones and that ring closes in as the song goes on. Positions get marked on the floor at load-in and the planner or the maitre d' keeps guests behind the marks once the room fills.
Cake cutting and the last dance
A single pair behind the action, so the sparks sit above and behind the cake table or the band, clear of the line between the guests and the thing they're photographing. Both moments need the room lighting down to work at all, which makes them a cue for the DJ and the venue's house lighting as much as for the effects position.
The send-off
Machines at the mouth of the exit aisle, and this is where downward and horizontal units earn their place. Both cap around 12 to 18 feet and throw away from whatever is overhead, which clears porticos, covered walkways, and portes-cochere that a vertical unit can't.
What's under the machine matters as much as what's above it. Hard non-combustible flooring is the easy case. Where machines go on carpet, the carpet has to be fire retardant or fire protected, and the authority having jurisdiction will want to see the certification of that treatment rather than take the venue's word for it. Expect the same question about drapes, linens, and anything else standing inside the effect zone.

Two hard no's, and neither moves at any budget: nothing fires under a fabric canopy, and nothing fires where the audience can't be held 15 feet back. Both come up at weddings more than anywhere else, because tented receptions and tight dance floors are normal here in a way they aren't on a stage.
Timing and activation length
Plan 10 to 30 seconds per activation. Most machines cut off at 30 seconds for thermal protection and the operator re-triggers, and reactivation returns with a slight dip in height, so a longer look is built from repeated bursts with that dip accounted for rather than from one continuous run.
For a first dance, 2 activations bracketing the chorus reads better than one long burn. Guests stop registering a static effect after 15 seconds or so, and the second hit lands precisely because the first one stopped.
Warm-up is why the operator arms early. Pre-heat goes on well before the cue, which means the effects position needs to be quietly manned through dinner service.
Music sync is possible, and at a wedding a skilled operator reading the room beats rigid timecode, because the couple's actual entrance is 40 seconds late as often as not. Combining cold sparks with other effects
Dancing on a cloud is the common pairing and it has an order. Low-lying fog goes first and fills the floor, the couple comes out and starts dancing, and the sparks hit around 30 seconds in or in the last half of the song. Firing sparks into an empty floor before the cloud has settled spends both effects and lands neither.
The two occupy different vertical bands, fog at ankle height and sparks climbing above it, so neither washes the other out. They run on separate control, and fog fluid doesn't get sprayed into the spark fallout zone.
CO2 jets and confetti run on their own control, off any firing channel shared with the spark machines. Confetti wants to be last in the sequence, because paper on the floor inside a spark fallout zone is a problem the venue's cleaning crew won't solve between two songs.
Room lighting is the only real lever on how strong the sparks read. Spark colour is fixed by physics to a range running red-orange through gold to white-silver, so no gel, DMX value, or granule choice matches a wedding palette. A bright room washes the effect toward invisible and a dark room dramatises it, which is why the entrance and the first dance work and the cocktail hour doesn't.
Machine class for a wedding room
Minis throw 8 to 12 feet. Standard floor units throw 12 to 18. High-output machines reaching past 30 feet exist and have no business in a reception room.

The day-of sequence
Load-in starts with positions. The plot diagram filed with the jurisdiction lists fixed machine locations with marked distances to the stage, the audience, the furniture, and the set pieces, and the machines go where the diagram says. Marks go down on the floor, and they stay down.
This is the part of a wedding that has actually gone wrong on us. CryoFX was operating spark machines at a California ranch wedding. The machines were moved while the operator stepped away for a minute, and from where he'd gone the line of sight didn't show him that they'd been repositioned. The new position put them close to real flowers and ferns treated with an extremely flammable holding agent. Both flower sets went up in flames as the bride and groom walked down. The fire was put out. In a different room, with a slower reaction, it's a catastrophe, and the whole cause was 60 seconds of an unattended machine on a floor where somebody decided it was in the way.

Two roles get confused on nearly every wedding.
